The First Assembly Christian School boys survived a very good team from Our Lady of Mercy on Thursday night, picking up the home win by a score of 39-25.
The game was actually a lot closer than the 14 point margin of victory. OLM had several opportunities to cut the FACS lead down to single digits, but their shots would not fall. Down the stretch FACS took control of the defensive boards and OLM was one and done on field goal attempts.
As the fourth quarter clock wound down, FACS was able to capitalize on several break away layups, either through a steal or a defensive rebound.
FACS point guard Tre Dennis kept pressure on the OLM defense with his dribble penetrations into the paint, then dishing off to the big men under the bucket. Even though FACS missed more than their share of easy shots under the basket, the execution was their and it kept the defense occupied.
It was a game of two fundamentally sound basketball teams, and on this night, FACS captured the “W”.
“We played sloppy but grinded it out. Our conditioning really paid off tonight in the 4th quarter when we went back to full court man defense,” said FACS head coach Joey McKinney. As they say, “a win is a win”!
All eight players for FACS hit the scorebook, with Jackson Bryant and Adam Warren leading the way at 9 points each, followed by Dalton Pearman (5), Joey Szvetitz (4), Robert Williard (4), Tre Dennis (3), Drew Carlin (3) and Brandon Carter (2). Warren also led the team with 8 rebounds, while Bryant had a game high 6 steals.
OLM scoring summary: Babcock (13), White (4), Buchmeir (5), Buchmeir (1), Fohn (2).
