The Glenn Bobcats dropped their last home football game of the season to the High Point Central Bison, 7-3. The low scoring affair produced no offensive touchdowns, although Glenn’s offense put up some big numbers.
The final score puts a loss on Glenn’s record, but the stat sheet tells a different story. Unfortunately they don’t award wins on the basis of stats. Glenn dominated in almost every offensive statistical category. First downs had Glenn with 18, compared to only 11 for Central. Rushing yardage indicated just how well Glenn’s offense did tonight. The Bobcats racked up 265 yards on the ground while only giving up 53 yards to the Bison. Central did put up 138 yards in the air as compared to Glenn’s 77 yards via the passing game. Third down conversions also tilted in Glenn’s favor, 8-4.
Terrell Jones again led the Bobcats with 124 yards on 24 carries. Paris Harris picked up 110 yards on the ground with 26 carries. In a limited passing game tonight, Hunter Bowles and Antonious Holland each had 3 receptions to account for the team’s 77 yards in the air.
Basically the Bobcat offense did everything right tonight, except not being able to put the ball in the end zone. The Glenn defense was certainly up for the challenge, “Our defense played well, had a great game plan, kept us in the ball game by making some key stops,” said Coach Payne.
Glenn’s only points on the night came with 3:49 to play in the second quarter. After driving down inside the Bison ten yard line, the Bobcats had to settle for a 22 yard field goal by Mitch Tomlinson.
On their next possession, Central’s QB Justin Johnson threw an interception that was hauled in by Bobcat free safety Kion Young. Glenn had the ball on their own 48 yard line with 2:44 left before halftime.
Central returned the favor when Jacorey Davis picked off a Paris Harris pass near midfield and ran untouched to the end zone with 1:18 left in the first half. Will Johnson tacked on the extra point and the Bison took a 7-3 lead into halftime.
As time was running out in the third quarter, Central was threatening to add to their lead but that drive ended when Glenn’s corner Aaron Patterson picked off a pass from Bison backup QB Woody Cornwell at the Glenn 23 yard line.
Glenn went for a first down on fourth and four with 7:55 to go in the game, but the Bison defense stopped the Bobcats short and the went back over to Central. Glenn just could not get “over the hump” tonight.
“It was a good football game between two good football teams”, said Glenn head coach Aldine Payne, “It came down to the team that made the fewest mistakes would win.” Coach Payne would like to have some of those “mental” mistakes back, “our kids try so hard that sometimes it causes them to make mistakes and then they play not to lose, instead of playing to win.”
It was a tough loss for the Bobcats who will take their 1-3 conference record to Ragsdale next Friday night at 7:30 pm.
